Grand Theft Auto IV save game location

In order to backup your save games for Grand Theft Auto IV on the PC you will need to backup two different folders, this is due to the game using the Games for Windows Live system.

Windows XP

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Rockstar Games

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\MicrosoftXLive

Windows Vista/7

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\MicrosoftXLive

NB: These are the default folder locations, if you have a different location it can be found by typing %LOCALAPPDATA% into Windows Explorer.

Assassin’s Creed save game location

The Assassin’s Creed save games can be found in the following locations:

Windows XP

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Ubisoft\Assassin's Creed\Saved Games

Windows Vista/7

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Ubisoft\Assassin's Creed\Saved Games

These are the default locations, if they are not in the respective location you can try searching for assassin.ini as they should be in the same folder.

Assassin’s Creed and Xfire

I recently started to play Assassin’s Creed on the PC again after a long break and I started getting graphical corruption such as in the picture below, floors and walls were disappearing completely, it was like a wall hack had been enabled. Checking online I found out the it is a conflict with Xfire and can easily be solved by disabling the in-game xfire just for Assassin’s Creed . This can be done by opening ‘Tools > Options’ and then click the ‘Games’ tab, select ‘Assassin’s Creed’ under the ‘Installed Games’ then check ‘Disable Xfire In-Game’ and finally click ‘OK’, this will save the setting for future use.

Installing Sid Meier’s Civilization 3 (external link) under Steam will still not load correctly when using Vista, in order to get it to function correctly you will need to import the following keys into the registry, both of these fixes assume you have used the default installation path for Steam:

How to take a screenshot in Team Fortress 2

Team Fortress 2 (PC) (external link) allows you to take screenshots in game without requiring third party software. Firstly you will need to ensure that a screenshot button has been configured in game, this is setup under the Options menu and is located at the bottom of the scrolling list:

TF2 Screenshot Key Setting

As you can see in the screenshot I have configured my screenshot key as F5, once in game pressing F5 will create a TGA screenshot.

To find the the created screenshots you can have to navigate to the following folder where <steam id> is your login id, if one of the folders does not exist then try the other one:

  • C:Program FilesSteamsteamapps<steam id>team fortress 2tfscreenshots
  • C:Program FilesValveSteamsteamapps<steam id>team fortress 2tfscreenshots

TGA files are not very common and as such you generally won’t be able to view them without additional software such as Quicktime. In order to convert them into more manageable files such as JPG or BMP I use the open source image program GIMP, it’s a bit overpowerful for this task but is very easy to use. If you have trouble with it you could try IrfanView instead which is more user friendly.
