Grand Theft Auto IV save game location

In order to backup your save games for Grand Theft Auto IV on the PC you will need to backup two different folders, this is due to the game using the Games for Windows Live system.

Windows XP

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Rockstar Games

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\MicrosoftXLive

Windows Vista/7

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\MicrosoftXLive

NB: These are the default folder locations, if you have a different location it can be found by typing %LOCALAPPDATA% into Windows Explorer.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Grand Theft Auto IV is the latest instalment in the long running Grand Theft Auto series, and uses a brand new game engine to transport you to Liberty City the Grand Theft Auto universe’s version of New York complete with an Statue of Liberty knockoff.

You play as Niko Bellic, a war veteran from a Eastern European country who is trying to track down the person responsible for crossing him during the war. As with most Grand Theft Auto games the story is good but is mainly an excuse to hang a series of missions from. I found the missions to be a lot simpler then when compared to previous entries in the series but it took just as long to complete.

The PC version is a very demanding game on your machine, since release a series of patches have helped solve some of the problems, but you will still need a beast of a PC to see it at its best, especially when running under Vista where 3GB plus of RAM is recommended.

Assassin’s Creed and Xfire

I recently started to play Assassin’s Creed on the PC again after a long break and I started getting graphical corruption such as in the picture below, floors and walls were disappearing completely, it was like a wall hack had been enabled. Checking online I found out the it is a conflict with Xfire and can easily be solved by disabling the in-game xfire just for Assassin’s Creed . This can be done by opening ‘Tools > Options’ and then click the ‘Games’ tab, select ‘Assassin’s Creed’ under the ‘Installed Games’ then check ‘Disable Xfire In-Game’ and finally click ‘OK’, this will save the setting for future use.

To take an in-game screenshot whilst playing Free Realms you can press the F12 key, if you want to remove the interface it can be toggled on and off using the F10 key.

You can find the screenshots you have taken in the following folders:

  • Windows XP: C:\Program Files\Sony Online Entertainment\Installed Games\Free Realms\ImageCaptureOutput
  • Windows Vista: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\LocalLow\Sony Online Entertainment\Installed Games\Free Realms\ImageCaptureOutput

Replace <username> with your Windows user name.

Far Cry 2

Far Cry 2 takes part in an unnamed African country which is in the throes of a civil war between two sides, the UFLL and the APR. Your character has been sent to kill an arms dealer called The Jackal who has been supplying both sides, but within the first few hours this aim is thrown into disarray as The Jackal helps save you whilst under attack and continues to assist you throughout the rest of the story.

The story is told completely from the first person view and instead of cut scenes to progress the story all actions are controlled by the user, this is in a similar style to the Half Life series and is designed to help you become more immersed in the main story. Your final choice is strange given your initial mission and it seems to have little impact on the overall ending of the game. There are a few issues with the game, such as enemies respawning at checkpoints which you have cleared only moments ago, but overall it is a very good game and I found it highly enjoyable. One quick note, the PC version allows you to save anywhere using quick save but unlike most PC releases the previous save file is not overwritten and is kept, this led to me having a 2+GB save folder when I had finished the game

Below is a list of various command line options that can be used with Grand Theft Auto IV (4) (external link) on the PC:

Tools

-benchmark Runs the benchmark tool and exits the game
-help Displays a list of command line options

Graphics

-renderquality

(0-4)

-shadowdensity (0-16)
-texturequality (0-2)
-viewdistance (0-99)
-detailquality

(0-99)

-novblank Disable vsync
-norestrictions Do not limit graphic settings within the game
-width
-height
-safemode Runs the graphics in the lowest setting possible
-frameLimit

Limits frames to a multiple of the refresh rate

i.e. if your refresh rate is 60Hz then setting this to 1 would locks the frame limit at 60

-fullscreen
-windowed
-availablevidmem Set amount of available physical video memory
-percentvidmem Percentage of video memory available to the game

Audio

-fullspecaudio Force high-end CPU audio

-nomemrestrict Disable memory restrictions

You can these commands easily by creating a commandline.txt file within your default GTA IV install folder (the default is C:Program FilesRockstar GamesGrand Theft Auto IV), put each command on its own line to run multiple commands at once.

Installing Sid Meier’s Civilization 3 (external link) under Steam will still not load correctly when using Vista, in order to get it to function correctly you will need to import the following keys into the registry, both of these fixes assume you have used the default installation path for Steam:

The great Steam ripoff

Oct05

Leave a Comment Written by Stuart Clark

Steam is well known for doing weekend deals, often with them halving the price of a game just for a few short days. Recently I noticed that Bioshock was being offered at half price and as it is a critically acclaimed game with a Metacritic score of 96% (external link) I was interested in buying it.

At least I was until I noticed this link (external link), in summary the US were being offered Bioshock for $15 whilst in the UK it was $27.49! Thats almost double!
