Playing free Flash games on the PSP

As well as playing standard UMD or PSP store downloaded games the PSP can also play Flash games, these can be played on locked and unlocked PSP’s as they are all loaded via the built-in internet browser.

In order to play these games you are going to need a minimum firmware version of 2.70, this version introduced support for Flash 6.0 allowing the internet browser to use Flash whilst surfing. You will also need an actual Flash game to play, a good resource for these is PSP Flash Gaming (external link)

Once you have your Flash game you need to create a new folder on your PSP’s memory stick, for this example we will call it "Games". The copy the Flash files you downloaded into the newly created folder.

Now when you load up the PSP go to the Internet Browser and then Address Entry, enter the path to the Flash file as "file:/Games/xxx.swf" where xxx.swf is the name of the file you copied, this should then prompt to run a plugin, select Yes and this will load the relevant Flash game for you.

To save re-entering the path repeatedly you can also save the path to Your Bookmarks allowing the game to be loaded up straight away.

Chromifying Firefox

Or how I learned to stop worrying and make Firefox look like Chrome.

When Google Chrome was released it suddenly dawned on me that Firefox did not blend very well with Windows Vista. The main problem is the complete lack of transparency which when comparing Firefox with the standard Vista dialogs was an obvious difference. As with most things Firefox this problem has been solved by an add-on called Glasser (external link). This is currently an experimental add-on so you will need to create a Mozilla login before you can download it, but I have been using it successfully for weeks now with no stability problems. It does cause some issues with the menubar but these can be solved by installing another add-on called Personal Menu (external link), this hides the menubar and moves it elsewhere onto the browser window.

WordPress is an open-source blogging client and is used to administer the blog section of this webslite. Below is a list of my favourite add-ons I use:

This is billed as ‘Out-of-the-box SEO for your WordPress blog’, it optimises page titles, meta tags, etc. all for search engines to use.

Mozilla Thunderbird is an open-source email client. Below is a list of my favourite add-ons I use:

MinimizeToTray

I use Outlook 2007 at work which allows it to be minimised to a tray iconv, this allows me to use the rest of the tasklbar for my open programs, this addon gives the same functionality to Thunderbird and is always one of the first addons I install after installing Thunderbird.

How to validate an email address in .NET

There are various ways to validate an email address from .NET, the choice of which one to use is based on how restrictive you wish to be to your end user. This articles details the following methods of email validation:

  • Email format validation
  • Domain name validation
  • Mail server validation

The simplest is the email format validation as it merely checks the format of the supplied email address and not if any of it is valid, the slightly more complicated is the domain name validation is where the domain name after the @ sign is extracted and the domain is checked to see if it exists. The most complicated is the SMTP lookup where the actual mail servers are contacted and communicated with in order to see if the email address is valid. A worthy note is that as each version becomes more complicated you are also increasing runtime and also the chance of a false negative, ie. that a valid email address will flagged as invalid.

Joomla! extensions

Joomla! has the ability to be further enhanced through the use of extensions, some are free whilst others are commercial. Below is a list of the extensions I’ve used previously:

Xmap

Various search engines such as Google (external link) and Yahoo! (external link) allow you to submit a XML sitemap to help them index your website correctly, the problem was that Joomla! does not automatically create the required XML. After a quick search at the Joomla! extension (external link) database I discovered Xmap. Xmap not only generates the XML sitemap but will also generate a standard (X)HTML sitemap which can be included on your website.

Mozilla Firefox is an open-source web browser. Below is a list of my favourite add-ons I use:

Mouse Gestures Redox

A brilliant extension which means I can navigate around the internet just using my mouse, I mainly use it to navigate backwards and close tabs, but it is capable of so much more.

Download Mouse Gestures Redox (external link)

IE Tab

For those websites that will not work in Firefox (or Opera) you can use this extension, it allows one click toggling between the Gecko and Internet Explorer. It can also be configured to always load specific URL’s in the Internet Explorer rendering engine (useful for Windows Update).

Download IE Tab (external link)

FireFTP

Creates a FTP client built in to Firefox itself, launching it creates a new tab in which you can FTP to any number of accounts that you have setup, useful for quickly uploading a file whilst updating the website.

Download FireFTP (external link)

Web Developer

A very useful extension for any kind of web developing, I have used this extension on many occasions to help diagnose layout problems that I was having with CSS. I especially like the CTRL-SHIFT-F command which changes the mouse cursor to highlight any component on the page which can then be investigated further.

Download Web Developer (external link)

BugMeNot

BugMeNot.com is a website where people can post anonymous login details for any website, useful if you want to read that one news article but it is asking you to register first. With this extension you can automatically query the website and submit the login form.

  • Free
  • Works in ASP.NET
